Medtronic Hypoxia Study
Location: Denver, CO
IRB: Salus
Eligibility: Healthy adults (18+) who can safely tolerate brief reductions in oxygen levels and wear a breathing mask are eligible. Final eligibility will be determined by the research site.
Estimated Duration: 90 minutes
Compensation: $50–$200
Medtronic’s Clinical Physiology Lab is conducting a study that simulates your body going up in elevation—similar to what your body experiences when hiking up a mountain.
During the study, participants sit in a chair and wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth. This mask is connected to a specialized breathing system that delivers a controlled mixture of the key gases found in air: oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide.
Over the course of 20 minutes, the oxygen level in the air mixture is gradually reduced. As a result, the amount of oxygen in the participant’s blood will be lowered to approximately 75%. This helps researchers observe how the body responds to lower oxygen levels (a condition known as hypoxia).
The study also evaluates how participants tolerate the experience to determine if they may be invited back for future research involving hypoxia exposure.
